Melissa McCarthy Responds To Critic Who Calls Her A “female hippo” In Identity Thief Review
“tractor-sized”, “humongous”, “obese" and "hippo" are just some of the terms film critic Rex Reed, 75(yes he’s 75), used to describe Melissa McCarthy’s performance in Identity Thief back in February. He started the review off by describing the movie as “trashy, stupefying” and a “chunk of junk.” All right, so it was an unfavorable review. Fine. But then comes the this; he ends his review by saying McCarthy “has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.”
It may have taken a few months for the comedian to respond, but respond she did and in the perfect way.
“Why would someone O.K. that?” she says, “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs.”
Way to respond Melissa! Classy. And Rex? I have so many thoughts about you now, but at the end of the day, it’s just too bad that’s actually what you thought. You make me cringe.
